On June 4th at 2pm, The Hill at Whitemarsh welcomed back to its Great Room the gracious and personable Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Mr. David Kim. This, his second appearance at The Hill since its opening in May of 2007, included something extra special as David was joined by his stand-mate and Associate Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Ms. Juliette Kang. The 120 in attendance for the private concert were treated to the airy allegro and artful adagio of the String Duo No. 1 in G major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with Ms. Kang on viola, to open the program. This piece was followed by a center stage demonstration of the intricate interworking of Recitativo and Scherzo for solo violin by Fritz Kreisler performed by David Kim. Before the solo, Mr. Kim noted the warm and well designed Great Room at The Hill as one of his personal favorite places to play. Before returning to her day job, violin, for a solo of her own, Capriccio for solo violin by Joaquin Rodrigo, Ms. Kang remembered that the last time this part of her repertoire was performed was when she had taken her violin on a raft during a wilderness trip through Utah, recalling the harmonious balance of the “amazing nature” and “sophisticated music.” Upon pairing back together for the finale of the concert, Sonata for Two Violins in C major by Sergei Prokofiev and Passacaglia by Handel/Halvorsen, Mr. Kim thanked The Hill at Whitemarsh for giving him an opportunity to perform a duet program with the Associate Concertmaster. The concert at The Hill, a success definable by the rousing ovations and bravos after each piece, was also attended by Maestro Luis Biava and his wife Clara. With hopes of welcoming the musicians back in the future, Mr. Kim and Ms. Kang, on this occasion, proved that they are truly and uniquely one dynamic duo.
