Beginning in October and running every week until April we will do our Hill at Whitemarsh special – studying together. We begin by recognizing that the Civil War continues to affect the political geography of this nation and intersects as well with our personal lives. We will show the Teaching Company Course which details both the particulars of that most devastating war along with analysis of the themes of slavery and emancipation. Each week, after the one hour teaching film, those who wish to discuss issues and ideas will meet in the Creative Arts room. For those who wish to read in parallel with these presentations, our Library Committee has purchased the latest scholarship, adding six new books to our already stunning collection. The new titles are:
- The Life and Times of Frederic Douglass
- The Fiery Trial: Lincoln and Slavery
- The Union War
- New York Times Documents of the War
- The American Civil War: A Military History
- This Republic of Suffering
