“The search for young classical-music audiences reaches a gratifying conclusion when the young have grown old enough to have time for symphonies—and places that have up-to-date-technology,” Stearns wrote in “For classical music, these are the golden ears.”
Stearns interviewed some of the approximately 100 Hill residents who attended a live simulcast of violinist Janine Jansen and the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Brahms’ Violin Concerto at the Kimmel Center.
With strong educational backgrounds, discriminating tastes and no job constraints, retirees are better able to appreciate classical music at a deeper level than younger audiences. A passion for classical music among mature audiences is filling seats at concert halls and simulcast venues like The Hill and providing significant financial support for performing artists. What’s more, Stearns says, playing for seniors often inspires exceptional performances by young musicians.
