On January 6, 2010, David Montgomery, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Phillies spoke to a packed audience of residents at “The Hill”. Speaking in the Great Room, Montgomery shared stories of his more than 30 year career in baseball.
After graduating with an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Montgomery began his baseball career in the Phillies Sales Office selling season and group tickets before advancing to executive vice president after the 1981 season. He was then elevated to chief operating officer in 1992. In 1994, Montgomery was designated as co-general partner and acquired an ownership interest in the team. On June 20, 1997 he succeeded Bill Giles as general partner, president and chief executive officer.
During his 38 years in the game, Montgomery has been active in a wide range of areas for Major League Baseball. He is presently vice chair of the Board of Directors of MLB Enterprises and serves on the board of the newly created MLB Network.
Locally, Montgomery remains an active alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania where he served as a trustee. He currently serves on the university’s Board of Overseers of the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. He is also a past member and former chair of the policy board of WXPN Radio -- 88.5FM, the university’s member-supported radio station.
